Haman Sells Himself to Mordechai
Sent to war by Achashverosh, Haman squanders his funds and begs Mordechai for a loan, but must sell himself as Mordechai's slave instead, says the Midrash.
The Yalkut Shimoni relates that Achashverosh once sent Haman and Mordechai out to war, giving them money to spend on troops and their needs. Haman spent all his money on himself and was left with nothing. He came to Mordechai and asked for a loan. Instead, Mordechai made Haman sell himself as a slave to Mordechai. So, seeing Mordechai was an embarrassing reminder that he was Mordechai’s slave.
