Do Knot Disturb

I had a friend who purchased an air-line ticket using his frequent-flyer miles. Some issue arose and he needed to contact customer service while at the airport. He called the company and apologized for not having his frequent-flyer number handy and instead offered his name. The agent was having some difficulty locating his account and my friend exclaimed in exasperation, “How many accounts can one frequent-flyer program possibly have for a Steve Moss from New York?” “Well over a hundred!” was the response. Common names can sometimes lead to confusion—or sometimes actually clear things up, as seen in the following Gemara.
The Gemara relates that Rebbe Chiya and Rebbe Yonasan were walking in a cemetery. Rebbe Yonasan’s tzitzis were dragging over the graves. Whereupon Rebbe Chiya said, “Lift up your tzitzis, lest the departed say, ‘Tomorrow they will be joining us and now they mock us.’” Since the departed can no longer fulfill mitzvos, dragging tzitzis over their graves is a form of mockery. The Gemara then commences a lengthy discussion regarding whether those who are already in the next world know what is happening in this world.
