Holy Cows

There have been several instances over the past few years of cows running loose through the streets of New York. In fact, a few years ago a cow actually walked past Yeshiva Shaar HaTorah in Queens. Why are the cows running amok?
Perhaps one explanation for this phenomenon is the craving for fresh meat. It would seem far-fetched for the bnei Torah from yeshiva to go all out for an evening supper, but what if they were preparing for a wedding feast? Perhaps some soon-to-be kollel yungermen attempted to procure only the freshest meat for the seudas nisu’in. Sounds udderly ridiculous? Actually, they may have been inspired by the daf.
The Gemara relates that Rabban Gamliel went with Rebbe Yehoshua to the market to buy a cow to serve at his son’s wedding. Rebbe Akiva found them and started discussing intricate Torah topics with them. Tosfos in Kerisus tells us that the reason the Gemara supplied the background information for the incident is to impress upon us their righteousness—that even while they were engaged in mundane tasks, these tzaddikim still managed to have deep Torah discussions.
