Coffee Break

Kutach haBavli and espresso-infused chocolate bombs. Seemingly, these two food items have nothing to do with each other. However, kutach haBavli sheds light on an interesting halachic point related to the espresso-infused chocolate bombs.
Those familiar with Talmudic foods know that kutach haBavli was a very popular dip in Talmudic times. At the time, Israeli scholars thought it was inedible, but Babylonians couldn’t get enough of it. The two primary ingredients were milk or whey and stale or moldy bread! Often, when the Gemara needs a prime example of a milchig food, the Gemara uses kutach haBavli.
As relevant to our Gemara, the issue is that this dip contained bread, which is obviously chametz. The question is if one violates the biblical prohibition against consuming chametz on Pesach if he consumed this dip. The Gemara concludes that typically it is not possible to do so. If one managed to quaff down this moldy bread dip by itself, one would be exempt from any biblical violation. That is not considered a normal way of eating. If one consumed the dip in the normal way, by dipping his matzah in it, he would not manage to consume a k’zayis of chametz b’chdei achilas p’ras. To violate the prohibition of eating chametz, one must consume an olive’s volume of chametz in the time it takes to eat a p’ras, part of a loaf of bread (around the volume of three eggs).
