What’s In A Name?

The Gemara in Megillah tells us that Memuchan, who is listed as one of Achashveirosh’s advisers, is Haman. The name Memuchan means prepared, as if to say he was prepared for punishment. What type of mother would do that to her kid? Would you name your child Glutton, as in glutton for punishment?
A 1999 study, reported in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research, found that males with positive initials lived 4.5 years longer than a control group of males with neutral initials, while males with negative initials lived 2.8 years less. The study also found that females with positive initials lived 3.4 more years than those in the neutral group.
Examples of positive initials are ACE, ICE, JOY, VIP, CEO, GEM, FLY, FOX, HIP, WIT, and WIN. Examples of negative initials are DIE, ZIT, PIG, DUM, RAT, GAS, BAD, BUM, and SIN.
Perhaps that explains why Memuchan, a.k.a. Haman, grew up to be so wicked. He knew he was destined to be a glutton for punishment. Why did Haman’s mother name him Memuchan? Come to think of it, all of Achashveirosh’s advisers had weird names—Karshena, Shesar, Admasa, Tarshish, Meress, Marsena, and Memuchan. Why did the mothers of these advisers give their children such interesting names?
