Still Sacred

A question that has been discussed in recent years is the appropriateness of entering Har HaBayis.
The Gemara records a dispute whether or not someone is liable for kareis by offering a sacrifice to Hashem outside the Beis HaMikdash when it is in a state of ruin. Rebbe Yochanan says one is liable just as if the Beis HaMikdash were still there in all its glory. Reish Lakish says the severe penalty for not offering sacrifices in the proper place is, sadly, no longer applicable because the proper place has been destroyed. The Gemara explains that this dispute turns on whether the place of the Beis HaMikdash retains its sanctity after the churban haBayis.
One ramification of this dispute is whether or not one can walk nowadays on the place where the Beis HaMikdash used to stand. The Rambam rules like Rebbe Yochanan. Since we are all presumed tamei meis, if someone walks on the place where the Beis HaMikdash used to stand, the individual is liable for the penalty of kareis. The Raavad argues, ruling that one is not liable for kareis for walking on the place where the Beis HaMikdash once stood. However, in truth, the Raavad’s position is not clear. Does he actually permit one to walk on the place where the Beis HaMikdash once stood, or is he simply saying that the severe penalty of kareis does not apply? Some understand the Raavad’s position to be the latter, and even he would forbid anyone from walking on the place where the Beis HaMikdash once stood.
