A Tale of Two Riddles: The Vacuuming Wife and the Havdala Surprise

Riddle 1: The Havdalah Surprise
A bochur sat down for his festive Yom Tov night meal in the sukkah. He enjoyed a hearty seudah, sang some zemiros, and then bensched. Immediately afterward, he spoke with his rebbi. At the end of their conversation, his rebbi said, “Time to make havdalah!”
“Havdalah?!” the bochur asked, thoroughly perplexed. “I practically just recited kiddush!”
The rebbi was insistent. “Of course, the kiddush you made was 100% proper; everything was l’chatchila, and it wasn’t made on any mistaken assumptions. However, now you must recite havdalah.”
Riddle 2: The Vacuuming Wife
This sounds perplexing, but the next riddle may shed some light on the first one.
A couple sits down to eat a festive Yom Tov meal. The husband recites kiddush. They enjoy the Yom Tov seudah together, singing and discussing divrei Torah. As the wife serves the main course, she comments, “It’s getting dark in here,” and proceeds to turn on the dining room light. The husband, who is a prominent talmid chacham, simply says, “Thanks,” and they continue their meal.
